Abstract

Smart Communities will showcase and promote information and communication technologies so they benefit all Canadians. This presentation will highlight recommendations to the federal government of the Blue Ribbon Panel on Smart Communities. The Smart Community initiative is a promising vision, one of excellence, innovation and lifelong learning. Smart Communities will ensure that their citizens are able to participate in the constantly evolving knowledge society. The changing role of broadband community networks, connectivity, and services as they relate to Smart Communities will also be discussed.

David Johnston

David Johnston is the President-Designate, University of Waterloo. Professor Johnston, the principal of McGill University for 15 years, will become UW’s fifth president. A well-known scholar in law and public affairs, his scholarship spans computing and information technology, securities regulation, public policy, information technology law, and intellectual property law. He is the author of "Computers and Law", "Cyberlaw" and "Getting Canada On-Line: Understanding the Information Highway." He chaired the federal government’s Information Highway Advisory Council (1994-97), chairs the federal government‘s Smart Communities Blue Ribbon Panel and is Special Advisor to the Minister of Industry on information highway matters.
