Abstract

Information and communications technology (ICT) is ubiquitous in today s society well, sort of. The one area that has consistently under utilized ICT is the healthcare industry. Part of this is due to the lack of adequate funding compared to other industries. The other part is the lack of understanding of the link between goals and objectives achievement and the role of ICT.

However, there are signs that the landscape is changing in the healthcare industry. Society is increasingly focused on proactive health and wellness rather than reactive disease management. This necessitates a new focus on the entire continuum of care, not just hospitals. The success of this new focus lies in part on ICT. I will present data and our insights on the ICT situation in today s healthcare system and on which aspects of the healthcare system have not yet been adequately addressed by ehealth efforts. I will then provide our assessment of what we need to do as we move forward to realize the healthcare system we need.
