Abstract
The Canadian Health Information
Management Association (CHIMA) unites and provides leadership to
thousands of Health Information Management (HIM) professionals in
Canada. For the success of our national ehealth efforts, it is
essential to understand the capabilities of HIM professionals and
their roles as we e-enable our health system. There are many
challenges faced in the ehealth domain where HIM professionals
expertise is crucial. We will discuss the current and future HIM professional,
classic HIM roles and new and expanded roles, the impact of electronic
records, data standards and privacy legislation, the competencies needed
by today s and tomorrow s HIM professionals, and the HIM transformation pathway
undertaken by CHIMA. We will also address the greatest challenges faced by
the HIM profession, HIM professionals, and CHIMA, as well as CHIMA s
strategy in dealing with these challenges. We have entered the age of
e and CHIMA sees this as an exciting and invigorating opportunity for
growth and change. We are joining forces wherever possible with other
organizations including the new National Institutes of Health
Informatics (NIHI), COACH, and Infoway. Along the way CHIMA has
learned some hard lessons that we will share with you and that may be
of significant value to the HI community.
