Abstract

This event will feature a panel of experts who will provide perspectives on and insights into issues raised during this year's Smarter Health Seminar Series which examined the value of IT in the health system. Over the past year, specialists in Health Informatics have looked at the dependencies of the health system on IT, the evidence that IT can actually deliver what is required to enable an efficient and effective enterprise, the nature and magnitude of the investment required, and the strategic pathway to ensure the desired deliverables.

Panelists will represent various perspectives of the health system including hospital administration, information technology, research, industry and government. The panel members will give their viewpoints on:

  • The importance and magnitude of today s information management challenge in the health system.
  • The penalties for failing to address this challenge.
  • The potential that information technology and communications (ITC) systems have for improving the health system and the process of patient care.
  • The current state of ITC capability in the health system.
  • Strategies for moving from where we are (with respect to adequate systems) to where we should be.
  • Critical success factors that must be addressed to enable and support this strategy.
  • What industry and academia can do to contribute to the solution.

This session provides an opportunity for those who were unable to attend the individual sessions to hear the highlights and to get an overview.
